Pearls Before Swine by Stephan Pastis for March 21, 2013

Transcript:
Rat: What are you reading about? Goat: This fire at a clothing factory in bangkok. Rat: Any injuries or damage? Goat: Nine Thais. Ten ties. Rat: Your parents must be so proud.
Nothing like homophones. And just to mess around, did Goat say nine cravats were damaged and ten Bangkok citizens were injured, or somehow the other way around?
And when the church library welcomed their new hand-made book repairer directly from her hometown of Bangkok, everyone sang, “Blessed be the Thai that binds.”
It’s not nice to pick on Cartoon-Boy’s parents, Rat! Besides, they might not be so easy-going as he is! I’ll have my Mai Tai while I tie my tie and tie one on….
In other news, the manager of the factory was found dead, the apparent victim of group auto-erotic asphyxiation while drunk…he Thai’ed on one too many.
Count me as another one who doesn’t get it. Or are we just looking too deeply? Is the joke ONLY about the Thai/Tie homophone, or are the numbers important? In other words, would it be the same joke if he said “Four Thais. Five Ties.”?
basically i DO like “pearls before swine” but this strip is… it tries to make an impression to be high intellectual – first we have a word play – thais/ties – top quality joke, really :/ and then I believe it is called “4 walls” when characters DO KNOW and are aware of than they live inside of the comic strip. but overall is low low low… I would suggest to go with pig being on diet for next… ugh… for a lot of next strips to come. thank you.
To those of you who say you don’t get it, the pun is the play on the words “ties/Thais.” The numbers don’t have anything to do with it, except to the extent that they apparently cause you overthink the joke.

Can ten Thais tie more ties tight in two tries than two Thais can tie tight in ten tries? It depends on which Thais tie ties best.

Can someone explain what the pun is? is it simply counting and the similar sound of Thai and tie?
