Isn’t this the first time we actually see her mom?

Why doesn’t she just do what we all did at that age? Put the makeup on at the dance. When I went to school, girls were just then being allowed to wear pants/jeans to school, but most parents wouldn’t allow their daughters to dress that way. of course we snuck pants into school and left them in our lockers and changed when we got there. And back into skirts before getting on the bus to go home. Doesn’t everyone at 13 do stuff like this? I mean, she’s not asking if she can smoke pot.

When I was in school there were skirt length limits and no jeans/pants except on ‘pep rally day’. In the winter if the temperature started below a certain degree, we were allowed to wear jeans/pants under our skirts [those big, many petticoats type] , but they [long pants] were required to be removed [and left in our lockers] before attending classes. They were pretty strict back in those days. Even the local university had a pretty strict dress code. It’s just the way it was back then and we were no different than any school around us.
