girl: My grandparents are coming to town. So I need to earn some money fast. Frazz: To buy them a gift? girl: To keep my own bedroom. How much do hotels cost?
When I was about 6, our grandfather came to visit. Guess who got booted out of his bedroom. I slept on a cot that had been stored in a closet, and as I rolled over in my sleep, I got stung by a hornet that was in the mattress.
One summer I rolled over in bed and was stung by a yellow jacket – and that was in the bed I slept in every night! Some bad things, large or small, just happen, and it doesn’t really seem to be anyone’s fault.
My grandparents constantly stayed with us between their time up north and in Mexico, Spring and Fall. Being the middle child, I was the one shuffled to some far corners of the house, the basement, the livingroom couch, my older brother’s tiny bedroom (8×10) where I slept on an army cot. Fun times. But I also loved my grandparents, they were very good to us. Eventually they got an apartment, but their car was broken into. Should have stayed with us.
I’m really beginning to dislike most of the kids in this strip. More selfish and self-centered than most kids that age. She should be glad she has grandparents, a lot of kids don’t.
I love these kids, too, and I still think this one is wanting to earn money to pay for the grandparents to “get a room.” The child isn’t asking for adult intervention, or for special consideration, or callously demanding that the grampies sleep on the couch. He/she wants to EARN money, for heaven’s sake, in order to achieve a worthy goal! And one characterisitc of “kids this age,” in my own experience, is that they are beginning to have allowances and to earn money for chores, and they really do want to learn about how much things cost.
It should be obvious, but it doesn’t seem to be: anyone who doesn’t like the strip or its characters (please excuse me here) DOESN’T HAVE TO READ IT! (Once again sorry for shouting but you know, sometimes…..)

Maybe the child wants to pay for the grampies to stay in a hotel so she can stay in her own room?!

This child is trying out a new idea on a trusted adult, and whether the idea flies or not, the child will have learned something valuable.
