The bullets appear to be bouncing off the side off the elevator . Maybe it is the distance. Rat 2 ducked any way.But I can’t identify the piece of rat on the railing. His Butt or his elbow? The gather is quite impressive., They have one gun, possible that others picked up from the car and it now is a real riot?I don’t want to look…………Blessed Be

Short of opening up with Amesworth weapons, the crowds are too big for small arms to deal with, so I doubt that the rats will try a Banzai charge. If anything, I’m wondering if they are reconsidering their careers. They might have acted like bullies at times, more cluelessly rough, even superficially malicious, but not in their heart of hearts, hateful brutes. I’d hope that they are now realizing that things have gone too far, and simply “following orders” doesn’t cut it anymore. At least, here’s to hoping.

I see the bullets are bouncing off the metal plate. The rat who died in the elevator – either he had already been hit and mortally wounded before he got inside, or (more likely) it was the last slugs that got him once he thought he was safe inside the car. Maybe the floor is less well-protected than the side. In that case, the bullets would have penetrated from underneath, and the poor thing was shot in the ascent.

@JennerThe metal plate wasn’t penetrated because of the distance and angle of the bullets. If you go back to yesterday you see that the plate was penetrated very well by some bullets.

If the rats want revenge, the force behind the high council have excactly what they want. They are much better armed. It gets more bloody than before.

Those shots are not ricochets from down below. Theryre coming from where the rats are. The only shot from down is the one bouncing off the vertical support. Maybe I’m nitpicking, but a ricochet drawn always shows an origin line and a traveling line. But yes, the rats are knee deep in the hurt locker. Even going down there, heavily armed would be suicide. There’ll be an Endtowner behind every door, window, and shadow with some type of makeshift weapon. In the Army we called this MOUT.

I don’t think the Rats want revenge right now. I think they are genuinely worried about their own well-being. And right so. We still don’t know if there exist other ways up beside the elevators.I think also that the bullets ricochet from the surface due low angle and energy loss over distance.

About this “Accident”, I would really appreciate a gun control law in the USA. I don’t say prohibit guns; just make the buyer and owner realize that he carries a great responsibility. And differ if someone is allowed to own a gun or carry it around in operable conditions (e.g. ready to use loaded or magazine readied). I’m full for free citizen right to own weapons, but not uncontrolled. I agree that you can teach a 5 year old how to handle a gun, but I would never leave a gun in reach for a child unsupervised. There is a study where children in a kindergarten were educated and warned from the danger of a gun and that they have to not touch one and immediately inform a caretaker if they find one. Later a gun was hidden in the kindergarten and the children left unsupervised (hidden cameras were placed in the room). How many of the children did play with the gun instead of following the instructions?2/3… I blame the media and the prudish USA for this, where Sex is a taboo, but TV is showing violence on mass…

I’ll have to see what tomorrow brings…but the lines drawn from the bullets to the (white) holes, and the “pointy end” of the bullets, still suggest they’re going through the thin material that makes up the elevator door to me—-as is suggested by the other (darker) holes. I don’t know what Mr. Neathery intends here, but I might take this as a slight lapse in the artwork. I’m here for the plot and characters, plust occasional details—-and, besides, I barely know what end of the gun a bullet comes out of. So there!

A comment we made yesterday about Wally figuring something out. I apologize, don’t remember who. I don’t think Wally is in any shape to make a rational decision on anything. The last two times we saw him, he was ALONE in the shattered remains of his living room and then ALONE in another room listening to the trial. All the time thinking about Holly. Can’t say I blame him. If he does anything it will be out of grief and possibly suicidal. Not to say that he would intentionally kill himself, but would put himself in a situation that would have a very bad ending. Losing, and the thought of losing, one’s soulmate can do strange things to a person.

By the way, the appearance of the elevator reminded me of something…anybody ever see the movie “Metropolis?” Not the Japanimation one, but the German silent film from the 1920s. Something of the elevators and their layout in Endtown reminds me of elevators in that…

Those are what is called high angle shots. Coming from the crowd below. Gravity and bullet angle takes the edge off penetration. The elevator floor is thicker so the rounds would not penetrate. Floors are always thicker to support weight. I have seen the 5.56mm bounce off car windows at extreme angles. Camaro’s front windshields were the example. Firing at an even angle basically straight on level the rounds would skip off. Of course the glass would break but the safety film between the layers helped redirect the bullet. Solution was to fire downwards allowing the tip of the nose of the bullet to penetrate. Stand up and fire at a closer to 90 degree angle to the windshield. Remember the Endtowners have at least two guns and some ammo. Unless they have a cache somewhere they are soon to run out.Their weapons do follow the 5.7mm or 4.8 H&K design. Those are high velocity rounds but have limited ranges up to 200 meters before they loose velocity and effectiveness. If they were firing 50cal, 7.62Nato, 30.06, 8mm Mauser from the ground that elevator would be Swiss cheese by now. That rat got back at the last minute. His view angle saved him. I’ve had that happen before. Peek over a wall to duck back just as that point was hammered by AK fire. In other words. Don’t do it twice they have that position fixed.Their High ground advantage is still in their favor. Endtowners may have guns but if all of the controls to water, sewer, food access are in the top halls of the Endtown facility can anyone say “BLACKOUT. FULL LOCK DOWN” till order is returned. One other point. Do you remember the modern design of the level the Rats occupy. Remember the cell the Endtown three are kept in. That cell looks like it could house a nuclear weapon and hold the explosion. Those cells could be gased to take out whoever was in there. Refer back to Al and Gustine. What were they expecting to place in those cells? That level and the Rats securing it were expecting I believe dangerous things. We do know monsters roam the surface. Some very large so unable to fit but refer back to Al and Gustine. The one Topsider mutated into something small enough to stepped on. Just think if one of those monsters was able to sneak into a scavengers sack and make it to a ripe environment like Endtown. Alien on the loose. That would explain the Rats interest in making sure all is kosher when scavengers come back. Sure you the scavenger have been out risking life and limb. You are tired, hungry, wanting to get home so here are the Rats all over you wanting all kinds of info. That would make you angry at the delays, searches, questions but that is what that level and apparently the Rat security were designed for.Security plain and simple. Very strict security to secure Endtown.

Obviously low-angle ricochets; the rat is ducking the fusillade. Also, why would the “inside rat” be firing straight out or upwards thru the wall panel, rather than down?

As to the large number of morphed identical rats…maybe that explains the shortage of lawyers in endtown.

Exactly – The gun haters focus on these events as something that gun owners allow. Gun ownership requires a huge responsibility. Children should all be taught how to operate a gun and the safe way to handle it, even if their parents do NOT own them.Giving a child a bb gun or .22 does not mean they should have full control of it. Just as driving is a right of passage, the point when a parent allows his children to have total control of said firearm is also a sign of trust. This also changes depending on the home’s location. A 12 yo on a ranch might be entrusted with firearms(cars, tractors) because he may have to use it somewhat quickly.

Since the elevators are the only way in or out of Endtown, the rats control the high ground, Dump some tear gas on the crowd below to disperse them and starve them into submission. That’s how most authoritarian states would handle it. Spontanious riots seldom go well in the long run.

Surfstuff55,Love it on many levels. I have gotten over my infatuation (or was it flatulence) about Dora. She is a tart. And the point you made is clear.Police responded to the Salisbury incident. Not US Army Spec Ops forces like Delta Force, SealTeam 6.The Rats I believe were trained for an entirely different purpose than Police work so were ill prepared for the duty. The Rats (I believe) are charged with the defense of Endtown not preservation of the public peace as police. One of my tasks back in the day was to go to Fort Hood and help train the Military Police and soldiers to ACT like Police when dealing with civilians. It amazed me of the FORCE level they would use on protesters wanting water, food. It was military force. Weapons in the faces. Knocking folks to the ground. All this done without any force towards them to begin with other than words. Where Police will talk. Take information. Try to get info on how to resolve the situation. Preserve order and peace. ONLY going to force when it is used on them. This was hard I know for a trained soldier whose duty is to kill the enemy now having to listen to those who were once combatants now occupied non combatants wanting the necessities of life.So the question remains. Where are the Endtown Police officers? When the call for the fight at the bar did it get rerouted to Endtown Security instead of the Police? The Rats were sent believing it was a major Security issue threatening Endtown instead of two drunks fighting. And only THREE were sent. When we have seen in the past LOTS of them show up.

I’m not sure…but to me it looks like the Endtowners in the last panel have more fire power. It’s the auroas of white light around certain groups of people in the crowd and a couple of people coming down the street which indicates the firing of weapons . But, I may be wrong.

I disagree in the sense that Flask was a villain. Even if she lost her mind towards the end, and was using Endtown as a means to destroy the topsiders. Flask had a pretty messed up back story, I really believe in her mind she was doing a double win, had she succeeded in destroying the topsiders, she would exact her revenge AND secure more safety for Endtown. I do agree that the rats were overaggressive, again, using the wrong troops to fight the wrong battles. Like Veteran said, military is no nonsense, no jokes. We don’t talk and listen to possible combatants, we watch them and impose as much threat into them as quickly as possible to stem any form of resistance. They really should be using police for these actions.

I just wonder how many causalities the Endtowners suffered in all this? Given all the return fire and a packed mob chasing you would not need to aim to hit someone.I imagine Doc is going to have quite a rush at his clinic in a very short time.Out of this CHAOS a strong voice has to emerge to take control and prevent more bloodshed. Someone that has the ability to reach both the MOB and the RATS.Just wonder who that is going to be?

One long ride down in an open elevator.Even if the crowd uses up all the ammunition, all they need to stop the rats is a nice, large fire where the elevator ends.Maybe it was a bad idea to have the security force living seperately from the population. We have not seen a rat having friends down there, so it will be extra difficult to talk to the people.

Quite the contrary, I’m a total Flaskian. I believe in authority and structure in extreme circumstances, such as the end of the world, especially when being hunted by topsiders. Endtown isn’t a democracy, you don’t vote for your leaders, and you trade work for material gain. Not saying I agree with the HC at all in this matter, but a rampant revolution of people should be put down to ensure continued smooth operation of the society. Sure it could lead to more violence, but a show of dominant force is one way to cause submission, even if not final.
