Who needs a truck? I keep ice cream and homemade strawberry ice pops in my freezer. When I’m hot and sweaty after mowing the lawn or grubbing in my garden, I just grab one (or both) and a good book and sit in the shade, reading and eating until I’ve cooled off. Ah, summer!
heard on the news, some politician wants to ban all food trucks, including ice cream trucks, hot dog stands, etc…because, the trucks are stealing customers away from restaurants and fast food.
Around here the trucks play either “Turkey in the Straw” or Scott Joplin’s “The Entertainer”; the same 16 bars over and over and over…
And on a quiet day, when you’re working in the yard, you get to hear it for 2-3 hours as it echos up the valley. Bit of a waste, actually. All the kids are either at the community pool or inside playing video games and can’t hear it anyway.
I used to ride Nestle Ice Cream Bike(MUCH better than the Good Humour/Dickee Dee/MrFrostee Bike:The blue one weigh 200lb FULL. The white/yellow bikes weighed in at near 650lb FULL.
Many long years ago the icecream cart I used was similar to the white one in Allans second photo. No music just bells to ding constantly. And ya could never go faster than a running kid, those things were HEAVY, and ya just pushed, ya didn’t pedal. I had a good route to start with and could make $300 a week even in those days. Not bad for 14 years old. Used to make a lot of refill phone calls.
When she turned 18, my younger daughter was enjoined either to take a summer-school course or get a summer job. She was soon driving an ice cream truck, which was quite a large affair for someone who weighed under 100 lbs. I just asked her what tune the truck played. After ‘WHO ARE YOU TELLING ABOUT THIS??", she admitted that it was "Brahms’ Lullaby," which looped about 6,000 times per day. After about two weeks she had to quit because her knees had given out from all the getting up and down. It didn’t help that it was about 120 degrees in the cabin, being in Florida and all. The other drivers were hard-bitten lifers – not an easy job.

Now if only they’d play something OTHER than a demented-sounding midi of ‘pop goes the weasle’

I always feel sorry for the drivers of those trucks. They have to listen to that music all day long and probably hear it in their sleep at night.

For me it was a snow-cone truck. He always drove too fast, though… Some days we’d have to chase him around the block!
