@somebodyshortI’ll assume it’s permissible to link to other comics , and mention that this is the best artist’s block cartoon I’ve ever seen:http://megatokyo.com/strip/69

With admiration towards Wiley Miller and the many other cartoonist, I don’t see how they do it every day.

So does this mean that as the comics pages get ever smaller, the cartoonist’s job keeps getting easier?

Just as I told my math students – if a problem is intractable, consider a similar related problem.

Thinking small still leaves you with a blank canvas.

This is a well-recognized technique for checking elements of composition, especially perspective. Even blank canvas has variations in grain.

Put one black spot in the middle.Call it “Polar Bear in a Snow Storm with Eyes Closed.”An art student did that in my high school class. However he did not get an A. The subject was landscapes.

Ah, art class in school. When I was in, I think, second grade in Pittsburgh, we had an art class. One day I drew a plum from life and crayoned it in nicely. Then I colored the background a bright, blaring red, my favorite color. The teacher made me do it OVER, without the neat background. Boy, was I mad! Still am mad.

Night-Gaunt, new things are always fun, especially if they are ideas….But some ideas are dead ends…Sure do some dripping of paint. It is a great idea! Do it! Do it again!@ But, seriously, how many big round dots do you need before people get the point….The best one is still Sunrise, Impression..By Monet..Not to say that Pollack or the other guy didn’t inspire other people. But where can you go from there? The whole artistic world went to all kinds of places as the result of the Impressionists, and the Expressionists, for that matter….That’s the difference. Some idea’s should only be done once, just because it’s an idea…Doesn’t even have to be a good one…

Setting expectations too high is one of the ways of people block themselves. Sometimes the best thing to do is take smaller steps.
