It’s 90f here, with 75% humidity…. now, today’s strip is the most Smythe-like one I’ve seen…. probably a redo of an old Smythe comic, too good to be from the 3 clowns; I laughed out loud!
If I was married to her, I’d have an excuse for my inebriation.
I would have an excuse for your inebriation too !As it is, your stumbling about the comics pages is inexcusable, sir. ..Once again, the emotion is overplayed re panel two. The way she is addressing him looks like she is shouting loudly. A measure of indignation is necessary for encounters of this nature, but hardly worth screaming about, lady.
From Paul Slade’s Cigarettes and Alcohol: Andy Capp:(http://www.planetslade.com/andy-capp-reg-smythe01.html)>“… our colleagues are ruthless,” Goldsmith adds. “They tell us in no uncertain terms. There’s a guy from Barnsley we work with and he said, ‘You two can’t write Andy Capp – you’re both Londoners!’”>Tough as these workmates can be, they’re nothing to the die-hard Reg Smythe fans who fill the comment sections on Andy’s various web platforms. For them, any tiny deviation from Smythe’s own template is sacrilege, and they often forget that even Andy’s creator was constantly evolving the strip to keep it alive.>“There’s a small army of people who want to resurrect Reg Smythe and get him drawing again,” says Garnett. “You can’t do anything about that. We’re not Reg Smythe, and we never will be, but we’ll do the best we can for the strip. When I was presented with the opportunity to write Andy, I jumped at the chance. To me, it’s still a great privilege.”-—————————————The above is from an interview of Goldsmith and Garnett – date uncertain, but must have been after they took over from Kettle, the previous writer. It is my understanding that Mahoney does all the drawing and G&G the writing. I welcome any corrections or further clarification. (All boldface is mine.)-Fanolio
More from Paul Slade:-“Sean Garnett, Goldsmith’s writing partner on the strip, first read Andy as a child, but revisited many of the early collections when he and Goldsmith took over in 2011.”
When I first saw today’s strip, of course, I thought of Sir Winston. Then I thought Henny Youngman.
Here are some Youngman quotes that fit Andy:
When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.I played a great horse yesterday! It took seven horses to beat him.Just got back from a pleasure trip: I took my mother-in-law to the airport. The horse I bet on was so slow, the jockey kept a diary of the trip. She’s been married so many times she has rice marks on her face.My wife dresses to kill. She cooks the same way.

@ Mikey, Chalkie, et al:The writing is so bad it takes two of them to do it. >I could live with the artwork but it could be a lot better.
