Smoking would not be a deal breaker for me, because there would never be a proposed deal. I would not even go out with a smoker.

So, in other words, Georgia sees Phil as a project, a lump of clay she can mold into her ideal mate. Might take a while, but if he responds correctly (that is, obediently) to her making his quitting smoking a condition of the relationship, they can then move on to the next step in his re-education. And yes, there will be a next step, because (as the great Jerry Weinberg once said) “once you solve your number one problem, number two gets a promotion.”

This is why you don’t live together before marriage. Why should he change? She’s already accepted him the way he is and he’s getting what he wants. If you can’t be happy on your own, you need to work on you. Never expect someone to change to make you happy.

I don’t think she should marry him even if he does manage to quit for good, he could always go back. My dad did. There’d always be that risk. As for living together I agree with puggles. Living together is a great deal for the man and a lousy deal for the woman as she’s probably doing all the so called “wifely duties” (meaning laundry, cooking, housework) while he gets all the benefits of marriage without any of the responsibility. Couples who live together usually both work so what does she get out of it? Zilch.

How much are cigarettes in Canada now $9-15 bucks a pack. Homes prices, gas, groceries, postage etc. you name it. You have to see the vehicles crossing the border at Port Huron in Michigan to give you a good prospective and they drive like idiots.

I don’t get what Georgia sees in Phil. Surely he must have some good qualities that aren’t being mentioned in the strip. All we’re seeing is Phil acting like a big, and incredibly ugly, baby.

Howtheduck and Puddleglum, you are both forgetting that Phil’s doctor told him to quit smoking because his lungs were bad. (See August 26 & 27) Georgia had nothing to do with the decision. She is just helping him to break the habit.

I said I wouldn’t marry a guy who smoked, either. He doesn’t. But before him, I fell for a guy who did. I was crazy about him! He picked someone else, and I was left bereft. I wished he could have quit, because smoking did eventually kill him, but it took 40 more years to do it it’s evil work.
