Anyone who doesn’t get this should find and watch “The Black Pirate” as soon as possible. It’s a silent adventure film with Fairbanks being the kind of swashbuckler Captain Sparrow thinks he is. Exciting, over the top and intentionally funny when Doug gets playful. And it’s in an early form of Technicolor.
Anyway, Fairbanks pulls this stunt while in the process of taking a Spanish galleon single handed.
While you’re at it, also watch “The Crimson Pirate” with Burt Lancaster. Bensondonald’s “Exciting, over the top and intentionally funny” also applies here.“Remember: in a pirate ship, in pirate waters, in a pirate world … ask no questions. Believe only what you see. No! Believe half of what you see!”
I ( obviously ) loved pirates and pirate movies a kid. Crimson Pirate is good but you can’t beat Errol Flynn and Basil Rathbone in Captain Blood Directed by Michael Curtiz, this swashbuckler has it all, but the dual scene on the beach rates up there with Flynn & Rathbonne’s duels in Robin Hood for great swordsmanship. And, like Robin Hood, you can listen to the Eric Korngold score and enjoy it without even seeing the movie. That’s when Warner Bros. knew how to make great films.
linguiust-and the Hardcover book of Captain Blood is one I read over and over when I was about 10 years old. A really great story written by a master storyteller
