Of all the wars in recorded history, only a little over 10% are labeled as “Religious Wars”.

Believing in something larger than oneself is not nuts.

the truth is the combined nuclear arsenals of the world can’t destroy the world even once, but most humans would be gone.

This reminds me of another cartoon involving cavemen. It showed two of them and between them is an enormous club about twice thier size. One of the caveman says to the other “Let’s hope we never have to use it.” BC version of MAD (Mutual Assured Destruction).

Maybe choosing between “there is a fate worse than death” and “where there’s life there’s hope” is not so easy.

While some, like Peter and John, were uneducated, at least half of the writers, like Moses, Joseph, Daniel, Solomon, Luke, Paul, … were extremely educated, far more than most people of their time. Far more than your education judging by your comment.
