My brother was on the high school football team (an end, if I recall). During the off season, he joined the track team to stay in shape. He ran hurdles, which actually helped him during games because he occasionally had to hurdle a fallen player while running down the field.

A very popular T-shirt amongst runners is one that says “My sport is your sport’s punishment.”

I enjoyed playing soccer and baseball to keep in shape between track seasons. And I know football players who did the same with wrestling.

BTW, where are the posters that claim all school athletes are nothing more than stupid, school-sanctioned bullies?

In my old high school (late 1940s), the student council made the rules (total student body plebiscite and faculty veto power seldom used) and the football team “enforced” them – no bullying, just a quiet talk, although 6-4, 250 pounds might be considered a threat.

I love it when a big ol’ defensive lineman picks up a fumble and rumbles for a 90-yard touchdown. It makes me wish the Olympics would have a separate 100-meter dash with a minimum body weight of, say 280 pounds (127 kg).

Or as Dogbert would say, watching engineers do aerobics.
