see everyone? we haven’t heard from the kids because they were to busy to call, that’s all, not like they were trying to make a living or something. thank you Jimmy Johnson, its nice to see them back
I’m glad they’re actually talking. My stepson is away at college and is very busy between school, tutoring and working so we mostly text and email but it’s nice to talk every once in awhile.
Ok, my take is that Janis is wanting to text (panel 1). Then the phone rings. Note the surprised look (panel 2). Then she says SHE can talk (to Gene) (panel 3). Then, she sort of implies to Gene that why can’t they text (panel 4). Well, obviously the joke is Gene can’t text because of his gloves. And!!!! he called her back after seeing the text. (Except you need tiny fingers to call back, not gloves but that’s something else). So, we don’t know if they’ve been communicating…probably they’ve been texting, but Gene can only talk. We’ll have to see what he wants to talk about.
I earlier asked about the significance of today’s Mother Goose and Grimm at http://www.seattlepi.com/comics-and-games/fun/Mgoose/(Of course I went and deleted it while trying to reply to it. :- p)Anyhow, after reading a comment on that site and having a couple of belated neuron firings, I ascertained that Richard III was exhumed from beneath a parking lot in England in September of 2012. (I couldn’t find exact date, as he seems to have been found in segments.) So, I guess this strip refers to the first anniversary of that. His repeated “Mike” likely refers to the comic writer/artist, Mike Peters.
This is exactly the communications relationship between my wife and me, with my wife as Janis and me as Gene. She’d rather text than call any day of the week — even when I’m driving, even though she knows texting and driving is a primary offense (meaning the cops can stop you for that alone; they don’t need another reason, like speeding), even though she’s heard all the scare stories about texting while driving being as dangerous as drinking and driving. I can’t break her of it. And it costs us plenty for those texts, while it costs carriers a pittance to carry them; so she’s lining their pockets at the same time.

Lots of folks haven’t grasped the fact cell phones don’t care about distance or location – the roof or 2,000 miles away

Either JJ is getting lazy about background detail, or else Gene has a dustbowl thing going on.

Looks like I can skip A&J for a week or so. Shouldn’t Gene have his own spinoff strip by this time?

I thought Gene was now a thing of the past since the wedding no mention of him.
