Check out the author Harry Turtledove. He has a whole series of alternate history books based on the premise that that the confederates won the war and how life is, up to modern times with the country still divided into two nations.
He also has another series, that starts during WW II, and that happens to be when aliens actually invade the world. The first book in that series has a lot to do with the Jews in Poland. Russia on one side of them, Germany on the other, and now an Alien invasion.
