I buy fruitcake once a year. It’s so rich and takes about a month to finish it.

My father-in-law actually made a wonderful fruitcake. I used to look forward to it every year. He died in 1998; I still miss him. (Oh, and apropos to nothing, I really do have an Uncle Joe – my dad’s baby brother – but he doesn’t do magic.)

My husband and I like fruitcake if it’s made right, but since it’s so rich, a small piece with a cup of coffee is very good. It can last a long time that way.

Another ancient ‘controversial’ holiday treat is syllabub (16th century):

I don’t mind pale fruitcakes, as long as there is no candied peel, but I find dark fruitcake just too heavy to enjoy.

A well made fruitcake taste delicious. It is the bad ones that turn people off them.
