Once I taped a small box on top of a bigger box, cut eye holes and arm holes and went as a robot. Stuck some x-mas bulbs on the front for effect, (no power). Cost was zero dollars.

One year Mom put my hair up in curlers (I had a Buster Brown Haircut, so curlers were new, not to mention the curls afterward), stuffed her slippers with tissue paper so I could wear them, tied a pillow around my body with a belt, and let me wear one of her house dresses (hemmed with pins so I wouldn’t trip). All the neighbors laughed so hard, and gave me extra candy, after asking me who I was and my repeating what I had been taught to say, “I am my mom after a hard day!”

going as a hobo was cool in my day. When I was younger we didn’t have a costume, we just had a mask, usually just a black mask, and my younger brother would gather all of them up so he could be the Lone Ranger all the rest of the year. lol

When grand ma was young there wasn’t a bunch of merchants trying to make a fortune out of Halloween or other occasions!

When my brother turned 13 on Halloween, mom dressed him as a woman in her black dress and put make up on him. Don’t remember if he had on a wig or not but when some boys came to the door for Trick or Treat one of them asked him for a date. Don’t know if he was serious or not.
