@Night-Gaunt49MY memory, too, of the general store with the penny-candy bins: why did you add ‘49’ to your username? Mine is because I had been throwing knuckleballs (on and off) for twelve years when Tim Wakefield (former RED SOX great)was born on my birthday.
when my kids were small I used to take the Halloween bags, after the kids were asleep and dump ALL of the candy into one big bowl and it was parted out one piece at a time for the larger stuff and a couple at a time for the small stuff. Usually in a couple of days they completely forgot all about the candy and would ask for other snacks after school. Before Christmas I would dump all the extra candy in the trash. My children do the same thing to their kids now, saves a lot of fights over who stole what from whom. So what if mom gets a payment for being the keeper of the candy. lol
My mom always just dumped everything together too and we hated it. We wanted to each keep our own but we had to share with the rest of the family and my mom doled it out a little at a time.
The size of the candy is shrinking so you do get less. I couldn’t believe how light and thin a Hershey bar was when I picked one up-the same dimensions but paper thin.
We always traded! Reeses and hersheys were always the most expensive. Kinda helped that one of my brothers has an aversion to chocolate so he was more than happy to trade out his peanut butter cups for about 2-3 bags of skittles or 4-5 bubble gums. He always had more candy than us but I call us even cause I enjoyed that peanut butter cup way more than I would have enjoyed some icky packs of skittles. lol
The whole comic made me laugh! This is totally how siblings operate. One tries to manipulate the other and it’s then reciprocated. When my younger one messes with my older one, I tell her that she learned it from her. I totally learned my ruthless tactics from my older sister!
I agree, Susan. Seriously, all politicians are terrible and the system sucks, so why bother to bring it up? The only reaction that I have to any political comment, no matter what side you’re taking, is “what an idiot, and no one cares what you think!”
My brothers went for miles carrying pillow cases on Halloween night, no worries about bad guys or accidents. We all got to keep our “special” candies and then Mom put the hard candies in big pickle jars by variety. One full of peppermints, one full of butterscotch, one full of those yummy peanut butter chews, etc. We had candy past New Year’s.

Not true. Just for openers, the rule of thumb for what you paid for housing used to be 25% of your income. That’s sound; you can actually make some savings there, if you are prudent. At 30% of income for housing– the ‘new’ rule of thumb – you don’t have enough ‘disposable income’ to make much, if any, savings. This might not be true, were it not also true that overheads have very greatly increased over the last fifty years, and not only in the matter of utility rate increases. We now are forced to keep cars and phones in most parts of the country. Those aren’t free. Places where you can maintain employement with no personal transportation or phone are very thin on the ground – even if there are job openings.
Nice to see that the economy hasn’t brought you to your knees, but you should probably be counting your blessings – and protecting your health any way you can. It doesn’t take much to bury you in this culture.
Most parents discard any offerings not commercially wrapped and sealed – can you buy candy corn in one serving packages?
We used to get fruit and homemade treats in our bags, but then people started sabotaging fruit, so that was out.
When we do Hallowe’en these days, we give out pencils, erasers, other non-edible school/craft supplies. Apparently it’s a popular idea, and I would have been glad to see it when my sugar sensitive ADHD child was trick or treating.

Although they’re children of a dentist, I’m not sure a child Elizabeth’s age should eat jawbreakers.

I am still wondering what happened or would have happened to April if the original storyline went on intact.
