Arlo and Janis by Jimmy Johnson for October 18, 2013
October 17, 2013
October 19, 2013
Transcript:
Janis: Oh, sweetie! Look at that harvest moon! Isn't it romantic?
Arlo: "Actually, that's the Hunter's moon!"
Arlo: The harvest moon was last month! It came earlier than usual this year!
Janis: Anyway, the MOON is romantic!
Neil Young’s song Harvest Moon is so very lovely, we adopted it as our anniversary theme song. (35 years this month.) It was a little bit of a bummer to learn that, actually, the harvest moon wasn’t in October. But, we decided, who cares! It’s just so achingly beautiful, we put it on, dance, and to heck with the technicalities.
The Harvest Moon is also called the Wine Moon, the Singing Moon and the Elk Call Moon….One leads to the other, eh? Harvest, Wine, Singing, Elk Call…..Kind of logical, really…
Actually, it IS the harvest moon, traditionally. It was defined as the first full moon after the autumnal equinox. Now it seems to be taken as the closest full moon to the autumnal equinox.
Whatever moon it is, hair springs from my body, i have this powerful urge to howl and then I wake up at dawn covered with grass stains, torn clothing and the feeling I’ve done something awful.
unfortunately there is no universal agreement upon the naming of moons, and the harvest moon is either the third and final moon of the summer season (assuming there are only 3, else the third is the blue moon), or the full moon in September, or the full moon closest to the equinox on either side. I have never heard of it being expressly the moon after the equinox but that may be true somewhere too.

Haha! It’s what happens just immediately prior to the elk call that might be a little freaky.

If Arlo doesn’t get more romantic, he may get no lovin’ til January, February, June, or July.

“Even he, that is pure of heart and says his prayers at night, can become a wolf when the Wolf’s Bane blooms and the Autumn Moon is bright.”
So, good night to feed your inner wolf.

My high school senior class song was to the tune of “Blue Moon.”
