Edith Bunker was talking to Gloria about the secret of a happy marriage. She said, “We never go to bed angry. One of us always says I’m sorry and Archie always says I forgive you.” (Or something like that.)
My in-laws are this way. Being around them is like watching a TV show. Interesting, that they’ve been married 50 years but nearly divorced after the first year. Then they had a kid and settled into the set roles that have sustained their marriage ever since. Not only do they love each other, but they entertain each other. They fit just right.
If Mrs. Pollifax can do it, so can Opal. Mrs. Pollifax is a character that decided she wanted to be a spy in her old age. Walked into a law enforcement agency (I think it was the CIA) and said she’d like to be a spy. At first they said no, then realized that no one would suspect a gentle grandmotherly type being a spy and thus Mrs. Pollifax became a spy. Love those books.
According to Wiki, the series you mentioned was “Mystery Woman” that was broadcast on the Hallmark channel. It starred Kellie Martin. (She also played Chris’ Burke’s younger sister on “Life Goes On” and a medical student on “ER”.)

Who was it that said, " In this family, one of us is always right, and the other is always me?"

Opal solves the “crime” in the first 5 minutes… then the rest of the show is simply her glaring at Earl.
