Pearls Before Swine by Stephan Pastis for December 15, 2013
Transcript:
Rat: Check it out. I got a job writing the jumble in the newspaper. Stephan: I love the jumble! Can I see one? "Jumble Unscramble these six words to mock an overrated cartoonist. 'I'm afraid it's just not there. That can't be.' The doctor says Pastis is missing this bone." Rat: Guess what else the doctor said you're missing. Stephan: Enough.

So who’s Parsel, and what does Rat have against him?
Old Man River about 11 years ago
Either the printer or the editor made a boo-boo. I’m guessing it should have been PASTIS. Also no circled letter in AND. No wat to solve the puzzle
Bilan about 11 years ago
Rat seems to be missing it also.
AGED_ENGINEER Premium Member about 11 years ago
Despite its name, it’s not really the funny bone.

PEARLS IS BOTH DUMB AND UNFUNNY
HUMERUS
stoneswivel about 11 years ago
There are no errors in the Jumble. It is both correct and consistent with Jumble logic and humor. Great work, Pastis.

Re. Rat’s statement in the last panel: Just one, or both?
RetFor about 11 years ago
wow, how do you not get that the first one is pearls…
sukiec about 11 years ago
Now unilaterally humerus
hariseldon59 about 11 years ago
I love this one.
hariseldon59 about 11 years ago
Remember the old Operation board game where you could remove the patient’s “funny bone”?
SFpagan about 11 years ago
Seeing how nasty Rat can get , it wouldn’t surprise me if the next jumble about Pastis would be Rat’s opinion of the cartoonist’s intelligence :p

Excellent!

You made me think on a weekend. That’s considered a felony in these parts! :-P
Kidding. Good one!
Sisyphos about 11 years ago
Hmmf! Not impressed. Cartoon-Boy doesn’t distinguish between humerus and humorous. Such a homonym!
justalady21 about 11 years ago
Looks like some of Pearls’ readers might be missing a B-R-A-I-N.

Duh

Pastis didn’t make a mistake…. to say someone is missing his “humorous” would make no sense…Someone too serious or unfunny is often facetiously said to be missing his “funny bone”, ie his “humerus”.
WoT_Hog Premium Member about 11 years ago
BRILLIANT! Dang! I thought the first word was ‘RAPELS’ Duh!
specinss about 11 years ago
Pastis took the Jumble up a notch. He made the scramble words make a sentence about Pearls (untrue statement)!
Arty8846 about 11 years ago
Where do I go to find out if I got it right?
Noah121 about 11 years ago
I remember when FoxTrot did this several years ago: the “Jason’s Jumbles.”
rshive about 11 years ago
Like the second line in the jumble. There was one like it in an old book called “Puzzles Anybody Can Solve.”
sleeepy2 about 11 years ago
Can we please have one of these every week?
Please?
harley wolf about 11 years ago
Im pretty sure it is suppose to say pearls is both dumb and unfunny :-)
Marc Schiffres about 11 years ago
Why the hell did I actually take the time to figure that out?
Radical-Knight about 11 years ago
I thought this was exceedingly Humerus…
Packratjohn Premium Member about 11 years ago
“Unfunny”; Gotta love it! Great job, old man. As a puzzle aficionado, I was drawn in right away. Maybe that’s a great new trend, you have to solve a puzzle to discover the punch line. Cool.
Dabattlebacca about 11 years ago
Lol, figured it out

“JUMBLE, That Scrambled Word Game”—Fits with Rat’s scrambled brains!
YatInExile about 11 years ago
I saw this on Facebook yesterday and went looking for it in the archives. Now I know why I couldn’t find it.
A_NY_Outlaw about 11 years ago
Wow, I wonder how many jobs Rat actually has had. I think he should get back to Joe’s Roastery
Thehag about 11 years ago
Jumped to humerus without having to do the d@mn puzzle. So much easier, takes less time. Didn’t have to get all jumbled up in the clues.
chabias about 11 years ago
Well done, Stephan!

Perfect
NKBoyle about 11 years ago
It must be great tibia cartoonist.
SukieDC about 11 years ago
Okay, for the anatomy:what is referred to as the “funny bone” is actually part of the ulnar nerve which gives that miserable twang when you hit your elbow wrong. So, near the humerus, but not it — which is just fine because this is a groaner pun on the singular of humeri, the bone in the upper arm.
shstuart Premium Member about 11 years ago
Thank you for making me think a little this morning! I look forward to this strip each and every day. And the puns are delightful, creative license is not something I FOSSA bout….
Number Three about 11 years ago
Sighhhhh… Does Rat ever give Stephan a break?
Daft question really.

Gokie5 about 11 years ago
You probably don’t want to know.
hariseldon59 about 11 years ago
Yes, but now they have special editions where you can operate on Homer Simpson or Peter Griffin. Maybe there should be a Pearls edition where you can operate on Stephan.

I thought the first word was SLAPER
raith7777 about 11 years ago
I love that only one arm is showing in each picture, so it really might be missing!
katheliz about 11 years ago
I loved this strip! Masterpiece!
naturally_easy about 11 years ago
Is unfunny even a word?
grymoire about 11 years ago
The solution for “MUDS” could also be “bums”.
dbe1800 about 11 years ago
this was AWESOME!!!
rkingsle about 11 years ago
This takes the award for funniest, but intellectual! I couldn’t figure out the bone scramble, so I went to “www.unscramble.net”. Keep up the great work!!!
