I had a friend Pam who broke her leg when she was in 5th grade and had to use crutches and I helped her too, but not in class since I was in 6th grade. She lived across the street so I helped her as much as I could. Of course I practiced walking on her crutches but didn’t like it and felt sorry for her having to use them all the time.
As a child, I never could understand picking on a kid who was crippled, he can’t help it. I saw that and stood up for many who were “different”. Sadly, I got accused of picking on a boy with a club foot(by him) and I couldn’t make it right. Many people who are crippled or disfigured get mean and like to bait people, like a boy with horrible fire scars on his face and body, used to like to bother girls and say things like “they wouldn’t go out with him”. His attitude sucked and that was the main reason. When I became disabled, I tried my best to be a regular guy, my kids and grandkids accept it fine.

Yeah, they’re fun until you actually have to use them for weeks.
