I don’t really get the point of the checkbook. Is Sedgwick trying to bribe Santa? If so, why? My only guess is that he will try to bribe Santa so that poor children don’t get their gifts on Christmas, but that is too heartless even for Sedgwick.

Let us not overlook that Sedgwick clearly believes in Santa; he is just doing due diligence in exposing deceptive frauds who try to exploit the good-hearted and charitable (such as he, Sedgwick Nuttingham IV). That is why he admonishes his Gentleman’s Gentleman, Jarvis, not to write a check for this fake!Of course, what Young Master doesn’t know about Santa and how he works…, well!

Sedge may believe Santa must be among the 1%, and only those with wealth should receive it.

He could write a cheque and receive a tax receipt for the charity. With the Salvation Army, I make a sizeable donation and ask for one of the collection envelopes and put my particulars on that. I get mailed a tax receipt. Most kettle volunteers don’t know about the box of donation envelopes or they wonder why they are in the kit bags. Each year I educate the person at the kettle where I donate.
