Baldo by Hector D. Cantú and Carlos Castellanos for January 07, 2014
January 06, 2014
January 08, 2014
Transcript:
Teacher: What family does the Ocelot, also known as the Leopardus Pardalis, belong to? Teacher: Baldo? Baldo: Um... I don't know. Baldo: No family on my block owns one.
The teacher is at fault. Both she and Baldo are using the word ‘family’ in a specific and restricted sense, just not the same one. As teacher and questioner she should have made her meaning clearer. This is why we have terms like ‘genus’ and ‘species’ etc.
Genus and species were dangerous for my H.S. biology teacher – he’d sidetrack himself into discussing Roadrunner cartoons. My favorite name joke from the series was when the Coyote tried to catch the Roadrunner with a Burmese tiger trap, and caught a Burmese tiger (Surprisius surprisius).
I checked with Gracie. It is Panthera tigris. The Burmese and Balinese subspecies are extinct, the Sumatran is endangered, Bengal is threatened, and even the Siberian` needs help.

In curiosity, does anyone on Baldo’s block on a Jaguar (the car, not the wild cat)?
