Let’s bring a little reality into it. For once I’d like to see a gym commercial where the participant is draped over the treadmill or bicycle wheezing and coughing.
This kind of attitude is pretty common, and it makes me sad. The vast majority of gym goers are nice people that will only judge you positively (or more likely ignore you) for making the effort.
If that’s what you think you have to do it’s the wrong gym. Ours has everyone represented, and all are nice to one another and encourage one another in our goals. Even the people who work there are all at different levels of age and fitness. You know, real people. I think people are getting over thinking they need to look like anyone but themselves and just be healthy.
the nearest gym with a weight room – only the guys take pity on the short, overweight person trying to work the machines, bars and bells. They know the skinny females are only there to impress the guys while we short overweights are there to DO SOMETHING! ANYTHING! to lose a few pounds and get fit.

Not our gym. It’s definitely the out-of-condition person’s place.
