As for Chaucer, I got pretty good at reading it and understanding it back in the day. I still have my text. I still remember the line “Out of the dunghill came those words.” I think they are pretty explanatory.

English Lit. would have been so much easier if Chaucer had used spell check.

So, make your choice, Monty! It’s been almost 700 years since that poem; why are you sitting around and feeling sorry for yourself?

Actually he wrote just fine for his audience. Unfortunately, the language has evolved a lot since then. Try reading Beowulf in the original old English. I have a copy of it around somewhere. But the movies have done a great job of translating it. Mind you, I don’t know how accurate the are. lol

Engelish doth evolve, but thou knewest that.

I bought a collection of Chaucer just to stretch my mind (as I do with Garcia Mendez to not forget proper Spanish) and had no problem reading all the interesting stories. Some of his just bore me, so I can’t say I’ve read it ALL, but a good part. I prefer the spicier stories.

My new friend reads even more than I (and has a bigger collection of DVDs). I like that he’s not just TV and golf for retirement (being in theater and square dance, and now, possibly in SCA with me). We may even hook-up some of our workshop equipment and create more beautiful things (so much more fun to do things together).
