I can understand Gus wanting to get out for his own sake, but how does this make Mary Lou’s life any less stressful? She’ll either take on waaay more responsibility if she buys her father out, or she’ll have to rethink her entire income source. I hope Gus doesn’t try to pass this off as “for Mary Lou’s sake”.

The biggest question, will she be asking Gene, or just jump in.That could be a very turning point in the relationship..Can’t see owning a business, too much work to keep it going, the actual job and the administration portion..Besides, as the ‘experts’ say, ’ We’ll be buying everything off the web.’ (yea, right)

Having friends that own a mom and pop restaurant, the mount of ‘work’ depends on how they define work.

They consider the restaurant their kitchen, with friends coming over for ’mom’s home cooking’. Dad hosts, visits with regulars, and meets the new people, the kids serve and bus.

According to Dad, the work is the accounting, taxes, and paperwork the government requires.

This story arc began with Gus very concerned about Mary Lou working too hard, being too stressed. He’s not going to sell out to her, Gene, or to Arlo and Janis. He’s going to practice “tough love” and get her out of this business. He’s 51% owner, so he’s in control – he’ll sell to someone of his choosing. 49% of the presumably large proceeds goes to Mary Lou. Maybe Gus will even put a big part of his cut into a trust for her. That will give her liquid assets to start fresh in her own direction, which Gus will undoubtedly spend his plentiful free time coaching her to do such that her stress level is much lower.

Maybe she needs to hit the road in a Corvette Stingray and go searching for her “place in the world”… (reference to 1960’s TV show “Route 66” for those not familiar)
