So true, Calvin. Personally, I love cats, and dogs, and horses and hamsters and…you name it. But I knew a “gentleman” who frequently declared to anyone around, “The only good cat is a dead one.” When asked why he disliked them so much, he would always say, “They’re independent and selfish.” He should have looked in the mirror—in reality I think he couldn’t stand the competition.
Ironic that when that man’s kids grew up and left home, the first thing each and every one of them did was acquire a cat! When he died, his widow adopted a cat a day or two after the funeral.
Yep. My beautiful boy, who died at 16 yrs old in November, ignored me all of the time. Then when he showed me some attention I felt like it was a privilege. Hmmm… I sound slightly pathetic. Lol
I used to clean heat ducts by reaching in as far as I could with a damp rag after lifting the floor damper. One time, I lifted the damper and got distracted, and when I came back, the furnace started up and a large cloud of dust came out of the vent. Then, here comes the curious cat backing out of the pipe!At least she helped clean the duct!(Now the problem of cleaning up the cat!)
Calvin’s familiar assumed the form of a large feline. Its chosen shape imposes several characteristics of the said species upon its behaviour and bestows plenty of feline gifts i.e. insufferable dignity, a taste for fish, predatory instincts in the case of the former; unmatched athletic grace, fastidious cleanliness and profound wisdom as an example of the latter
Aye. True enough. Neither do my friends. They do their best to keep the place in order whenever they come by. Unless of course there’s beer. Lots of it.
Dogs are extremely affectionate and they rarely miss an opportunity to remind us of their unconditional love and undying friendship.
Cats, on the other hand display their affection on their own terms and their own schedule.
Beautiful illustration of “mother nature” and its origin: anybody who honestly and objectively looks at the world around us sees too much organization, planning and order for creation to be a mere happenstance — but design implies a Designer who does, in fact, care about what we do and is NOT indifferent to human behavior. That’s too much responsibility for some people and so “mother nature” was invented, a construct to which Watterson evidently subscribes.
I’ve always wondered why people who think all living things came from one spontaneously generated cell; seperate man from the rest of nature. If that is your believe, then wouldn’t man be part of nature also. And if this is so; why is man the enemy of nature. Are not his actions just the next natural step in the evolution of nature?
I have 4 cats and if they get any more affectionate I won’t have time to eat. I can’t sit down without one of them on my lap, I can’t walk without one of them wrapped around my legs. I can’t have dinner without one of them patting my leg or jumping in my lap. Rarely do I ever feel ignored.
I’ve never had to “litter train” a cat in my life, even the street kitten I adopted. Show them where the box is, plop them in it, and in the case of a kitten, hold their front paws and make a little digging motion. They all got it, first time. Inappropriate defecation/urination is either protest (they’re angry about something, such as being left alone all day when they’re used to company) or a sign that something is physically wrong.

And yet we still think we can “play” with Mother Nature without consequences….

Nature didn’t know that we were coming, doesn’t care that we’re here, and will not miss us when we’re gone.

Sheesh, Calvin! You complain when Hobbes ignores you and you complain when he shows his complete attention by pouncing on you!

I think it’s been proven- if you die or become disabled-The dog will stand by you until help arrives. The cat will eat you.

Its hard not to when people the likes of Al Gore preaching that junk. Calvin is more believable," nature REFUSES to be tamed ".

I find dogs are much more loving and affectionate than cats. Sorry but I’ve always been a dog person.

Dogs are our children. Cats are our friends. You can tell your children what to do (sort of), but you can’t tell your friends what to do.
