Oops! in 1986, the U.S. Air Force dropped depth charges on the submerged volcanic island of Ferdinadea, near Italy, thinking it was a submarine! Americans eat almost 100 million lbs of avocados during the Super Bowl football game - enough to cover the field 40 feet deep. In 1895, Henry Latimer Simmons invented trains that could leapfrog each other on a single track - they appeared as a fairground ride at Coney Island, N.Y., in 1905.

What was the USAF doing over Italy before the mishap anyway? As for the avocado, gotta love a good one for guacamole or as is (sans the skin and pit of course).

“In 1895, Henry Latimer Simmons invented ramp-shaped railroad cars: When one train meets or overtakes another train, one train will run up the rails carried by the other train, and will run along the rails and descend onto the rails at the other end of the lower train.”

My question is, “did they miss when they bombed a stationary submerged island?” I’m betting they did.

An island in Lake Champlain was bombarded by the British in the middle of the night, they thought it was one of General Arnold’s Champlain fleet..\\//_

US Navy Anti Submarine Warfare planes carry depth charges (and torpedoes). I’ have never heard of a US Air Force plane carrying them.

I’d be pretty nervous if I was on a train that had another train on top of it…. ==8-O

FinnyGirl: The trains of the period, although not too tiny, were generally much smaller and lighter than the ones you’d see today. Slips into the slightly nuts from the insane.
It was also likely cheaper than sidings, extra track, switches, etc.
Not something I’d care to ride….
