Phoebe and Her Unicorn by Dana Simpson for February 14, 2014
Transcript:
Phoebe: Mom, Marigold's sick... could you drive me to school tomorrow? Mom: Why can't you take the bus? Phoebe: Because I'm used to riding a unicorn! If I go straight from that to riding the smelly old school bus, I could go into SHOCK! Mom: So, the hierarchy goes "unicorn, mom, school bus." Phoebe: If that helps you.

So Phoebe’s got school on a Saturday?

I may have failed to properly think through the scheduling of this arc. :)

Once you’ve gone by unicorn, it’s hard to downgrade.

Is HN going to be like “Gasoline Alley” in the 20s, where many strips started with a variation on, “Hey, remember what we were talking about yesterday? It just occurred to me that….”
In the meantime, if Phoebe doesn’t take the school bus, what will happen 50 years from now when she needs to remember what the bus driver was like to inform a role she’s playing? (Actually happened to me. No, really.)

Mom: “Wait. Tomorrow is Saturday! I see Marigold’s fever has affected you.”
Phoebe: “Marigold says that is not harmful. Must be the routine: I’m so used to travel with Marigold, that when she is not with me I look for other means of transport …”
Or something like that. :) Hope this helps!

Considering the alternatives, Phoebe’s right anyway. A unicorn is better than anything, and Mom is better than the school bus. Frankly, I don’t see the problem. :-)…(Of course, anything is better than the Los Angeles Metro, but that’s beside the point…)

Guys, it’s a comic strip! Real-life timelines are irrelevant. Why, this one day of comic strip time has already lasted, what, three or four days of real time!

Actually with all of the snow and cold school cancellation days Indiana is thinking of using Saturday’s as a makeup day. I think they have cancelled 8 days since school resumed after Christmas break. (The other alternatives are to add an hour to each school day or go to the middle of June). That is what you get when you mandate 180 days of school per year.

I think just under Unicorn is the cool skateboarding to school on the back of jeeps from “Back to the Future”, but I think it’s easier, and safer, to go to the Mom level next.

Agreed mam.

That’s usually how it’s worked in the past. But Dana told me not to overthink it, so…
What were we talking about? :P

In my day, school was 6 hours long each day. We had a 180-day school year. I can recall one winter where we lost two days from our winter vacation (usually about the middle of February) because of snow days. Perhaps school boards can take one or two days out of Winter and Spring vacations to make up for some of those days. I live in Florida, hence I don’t know how many school days have been snowed out this year, but the best course may be to have school until the third week of June. My school days would see school end about the 15th of June, give or take a day or two, depending on how the year went. The best course might be to extend school until the 21st or thereabouts of June. Not the happiest for the kids, but maybe the best way.

Here in Portland Ore, the teachers are going to strike. (baring a miracle), so the kids will probably have to go to school on Christmas! And ANYTHING is better than a school bus, I’ll never forget the smell. (kids and bananas are a funk mix)
