The Origin of the word cliffhanger isâŠ. The term âcliffhangerâ may have originated with Thomas Hardyâs serial novel A Pair of Blue Eyes in 1873. The word âcliffhangerâ originated from the film serials âThe Perils of Paulineâ, one episode ended with the heroine actually hanging from a cliff and the term was born.
