Doonesbury by Garry Trudeau for March 11, 2014
Transcript:
Mark: Even though the president has given in to all my demands, I have decided to act! I'm sorry, Mr. President, but until my demands are enacted, I'm taking over this office! How about that, huh? President: Well, yes, that seems fair. I'll leave immediately. Before I go, shall I show you where I keep my brandy and cigars?

I feel like I vaguely remember what these characters looked like, though not the story lines at all. Déjà vu somewhat…

I didn’t start reading Doonesbury until 1973, so I missed this one.

I am reminded how some group or other decided to take over the governor’s offices until such time as Florida’s legislature caved in on their demand we removed our guarantee of the right to self-defense. Governor Scott let them take over and went elsewhere. They are still trying to force us to obey them but went home for a while.Join them. Boycott all things Floridian until we bow.

If Mark only knew then, what we know now on the greatness he will achieve. Order that pizza, drink the brandy, smoke the cigars and relax.

I have a lot of old “Doonesbury” pocket book collections but they don’t go quite this far back so I’m enjoying this. Although if Trudeau is really going to run 4 weeks of reruns for each year (over 40 years!) of publication, it’s going to be forever until he creates new week-day strips. Maybe he’s just “secretly” plotting to just go to Sunday only, which would be a shame in these treacherous modern times…….

I think they’re just cherry-picking the old strips in response to a lot of requests here to do that. So we’ll see what finally happens, if there’s a third seaon of Alpha House or if Doonesbury does finally become a Sunday-only strip. Either way, it’s been a great ride.

I worked for the company Scott created and ran into the ground. For all the penny-pinching, he still sent each employee a monthly newsletter with a full-color picture of himself on it. Can you imagine how much it cost to send every employee a newsletter with color printing? And he wasn’t that great-looking then, either. I’ve tried to boycott FL as much as possible, given that my 97-year-old aunt lives there, it’s difficult.

My mom must have been pregnant with me when this was in the newspapers.

1970 I was in third year. Even our young (five years old) Canadian university got into the act. We had the protests, the occupation of the president’s office, the midnight police raid to drag off the protesters… Great times!

ROFL. I ACTUALLY remember THIS one! I had it cut out and pinned to my wall over my desk.

1970, I was third year – of life. I am enjoying seeing these old strips, even though like most I would love if GT kept the current stories going and continued skewering political stupidity.

This is fun. Trying to remember back that far – don’t remember actual storylines, but vaguely recall the college president was the opposite of the protesters. Just laid back – tired and looking forward to retirement.
