Transcript:
Luann: "When I was little, easter was my favorite holiday. I loved the egg hunt and the candy" Luann: "When I got older, I liked Christmas better 'cuz I got lots of presents -AND two weeks off school" Luann: "Now I like Halloween best. Dressing up and going to awesome parties is way more fun than finding easter eggs or opening a bunch of lame Christmas gifts" Bernice: "Have you ever given any thought to the real purpose of these holidays?" Luann: "You mean the boost to the economy?"

The boost to the economy: Sometimes, Luann is wise. But only sometimes, on rare occasions.

“Too bad we don’t get to see Bernice explain to Luann the real purpose behind Easter. It would be interesting to see her perspective.”Good point.

"I do a lot of that re-editing and reposting myself. "^A sure sign of our humanity, Lol!– And sort of like our Houston colleague was saying, yesterday: “Always under construction”! (XD)

It’s funny how Bernice manages to be self-righteous and pompous about Halloween.
Durandal_1707 almost 11 years ago
I doubt she’d be too bothered about the Germanic goddess Eostre.
Fly On The Wall almost 11 years ago
Funny how Christ’s birth and ressurection (our salvation) is superceded by a day of demonic revelry. Just shows how we as a nation have such a bleak future.

I’m more interested in what she thinks the “real” purpose of Hallowe’en is.
LtPowers almost 11 years ago
Really? Venerable Bede made that very connection. There may not be much other evidence for it, but likewise there’s no other credible proposal for the origin of the name either.

ESPECIALLY Halloween! Kept Alive ONLY to Fatten the Coffers of Toy and Candy Companies so People can dress like Idiots for one night a year, as if the OTHER 364 days weren’t GOOD Enough!

Bernice is a pain. Does that girl ever say anything that isn’t snarky?
Sisyphos almost 11 years ago
Spoken like a well-trained little consumer, Luann! I wonder, though, how much better Bernie might be, if at all?
Angelalex242 almost 11 years ago
Well, it looks like for the real meaning of Easter, or Christmas, we need to pop on over to Peanuts. Linus tends to know what it’s REALLY all about.
lordlundar almost 11 years ago
You mean that it was originally a Pagan fertility festival celebrating the spring solstice?
Angelalex242 almost 11 years ago
Eh. Whatever it may have meant in distant antiquity, nobody really cares anymore. But there’s still 1/3 of all mankind who cares about its current meaning.
johndifool almost 11 years ago
Huh, 32 comments in and nobody’s pointed out Luann’s younger self is NOT being drawn in the way she originally was years ago?

Hallowe’en has a purpose?

The current purpose of these holidays is to boost the nation’s economy… the original purpose was to boost the Church’s economy.

Too bad that Greg has dropped the ball today. I can understand that he wants to recognize Easter, but it’s kind of jarring to have a prom story line that I’m sure will resume on Monday, get interrupted for one day by something non-related to it.
To be honest, I don’t ever recall the Daily (Mon-Sat). strip ever being all that synchronized with the Sun. strip. I think the closest we’ve come to it in my time of reading it regularly was when Brad/Toni just got formally engaged on 04/02 of last (or 2) years ago. We saw one snippet on a Sun. of Brad/Tony window shopping for rings in a jewelry store. Other than that, I’m not sure the “Sunday Strip only” viewers even know Brad and Toni are engaged. At least, I don’t recall any compelling Sun. strip referring to their engagement.
And, have there been any Sun. strips that have referred to the pending HS Graduation? If so, I don’t recall them.
Then again, I’m in “final study” mode for my last exam (one week from Tues.) so I might be forgetting a lot. :-)

INGSOC, you got it.Halloween is the eve of All Saints Day, which is followed by All Souls Day. In New Orleans, a time to visit the gravesites of our forebears, asking them to pray for us or us praying for them, respectively.
Caldonia almost 11 years ago
You’re right. Imperious and holier-than-thou are better descriptions.
LASteve almost 11 years ago
Yeah, let’s concentrate on the REAL meaning of Halloween — the night when the spirits of the dead come back to walk the earth.

Halloween is not a holiday.

ORMouseworks almost 11 years ago
Very, very pretty! How Do you keep track of all of the varieties?! ;)
ORMouseworks almost 11 years ago
Yes…but, you could always say that you’re looking for just the right rose for Luann’s graduation from high school, and are gathering posters choices, LOL! ;)
ORMouseworks almost 11 years ago
Wow! They must really fragrance the air when they are all blooming like that! (And I bet a dandelion wouldn’t Dare to pop it’s head up on your lawn LOL!). ;)
ORMouseworks almost 11 years ago
Very Nice! I like the way you’ve separated the roses from the lawn…I have some pavers, but only one level, and I am just finishing up putting them down as I now have some free time… ;)
ORMouseworks almost 11 years ago
Ahhhh, I can smell it from here! Thanks for the pics…I’m sure Luann would love every one of them, LOL! ;)

I remember the names of most of mine, but the ones that stick out are the “Betty Boop Floribunda,” and the “French Lace Floribunda…” and I only have about 15! =-O I am hopeful about the French Lace one…its putting on a good crop of leaves, and if it will Ever quit raining, it might begin to set buds. I don’t expect my roses to start blooming until May, however… ;)
