We got broken into once.My first concern was for our teddy bears.Happened to lose $15,000 worth of Hasselblad cameras, but the bears were OK.Insurance paid up, but if anything had happened to our bears I would have been devastated.

I was 33 when it happened, just before I married. The bears came into our lives coincidentally when my girlfriend (later wife) and I both surprised each other with a bear for the other for Valentines Day.My bear to her was slightly larger than her bear for me and became sort of surrogates for our interstate relationship. But they both have their own personalities, though with a strong tint of our own.Make no mistake, the theft derailed my photographic career, not a joke.Sentiment is a mild way of describing something you’d run into a burning house to save.

Someone broke into my apartment some 20 years ago – left the stereo, tv, etc. and only took a ‘Twin Peaks’ VHS tape and a bottle of vodka from the freezer. Weird.

The ultimate insult – when we were broken into, the guy not only took nothing, he left a few things.

In my first apartment I was broken into three times in two weeks (the third time there was nothing left to take). It doesn’t get any easier.

I remember this arc from when it originally ran. Hobbes did nothing to the thief. The fact of Hobbes’ vitality is that he only comes to life when Calvin and nobody else is around.

I got broken into on my birthday. Burglar took some second-hand junk. “Replacement insurance” meant it was all replace with brand-new good stuff. Best birthday present ever!

“Why were the bears more important than the cameras?” Have you never read The Velveteen Rabbit?

To Grandma as we are all leaving her house: “Lock it?”

Grandma: “No, don’t bother. If someone breaks in and finds something worth stealing, maybe they’ll split it with us.”

The theft was in 1990, so no digital backs. If I still had the then new 503cx, I would have probably got a digital back by now.The 500CM (from 1970) that was not stolen is still in service, and doing fine shooting film.

And …I still have the Bears from 1990, but no longer the Wife. She gave me custody of the Bears, something she has expressed regret for.

No, I don’t cuddle up to them in bed.Too small. And Guests to my place of repose would comment unfavourably.
