As a matter of fact, in the original strips Walt paced up and down in the “Grandfather’s” waiting room!

I’m enjoying this so much. First with Walt, and now this. I wonder what look back we will get next….I hope we do get more of these :-)

Two soldiers, a sailor, a nerd, and a guy who’s been though it four times already. And Walt. I dunno…..they ALL look to young to be grandfathers.

Chipper’s real name was given as Thomas Walter for both “grandfathers” .

LOL! Smoking in the waiting room. That’s a blast from the past. Plus all the dads are in the waiting room instead of with the mama. Some things have changed for the better. Is that Walt’s cig smoking in the ash tray?

I like Jim’s tribute to Frank King’s original drawing in his signature today.

That would make him ~91 and Uncle Walt over 118, love how long characters live in comics.

Most comics characters don’t age; the characters in “Gasoline Alley” do (except for Rufus and Joel), though some of the fourth-generation characters, like Chipper’s twins, seem to be younger than they ought to be. It is canonical that Skeezix is 93 and that Walt is, as you say, over 118. He is also (in the strip) the last living veteran of World War I.

An even more complex situation is in “On the Fastrack”, where, a while back, one of the characters announced on her Facebook page (the Facebook page is real) that “the artist who draws this strip” has stopped aging the characters, even though they’ll keep on aging “in real life”. It’s especially more complicated because “Safe Havens”, by the same writer/artist, has crossovers with “On the Fastrack”, and the characters in that strip are still aging.

Did any of you notice that today’s strip is signed “Scancarelli à la King”?
