Oh my word! WHERE to start? How LUCKY Joy is? How LUCKY Verla is? And WHY is Verla so lucky? Well, for starters while she might not think it’s so fortunate, she’s managed to escape marriage to Jer thus far, although I think it’s Jer who thinks HE is the one who’s lucky to have actually escaped holy matrimony. This whole bunch gives me agita with their total ignorance of what IS! Julie is a genius — she nails these people spot on! I guess that’s why I love this comic strip so much — I’ve seen people like this in real life, so it’s hilarious to me to see them lampooned like this!
Verla is the lucky one, she is alone while Joy is married to Burl. a fate worse than death!. Can you imagine living with a flatuent, dirty, obese, lazy, coniving slob! Gag….
Right…. show sympathy for Verl….never mind, my poor, poor, baby sister Verla, after all, I myself have to be alone eight hours a day (unless my dewicate baby-boy Buww has to stay home wif a tum-tum pwobwem.)
Meanwhile excuse me while I make him a romantic dinner, make anniversary plans, and show off my bliss by having lots of…. well, a few…I mean, OK, there’s Marlene and Verla…. over for coffee.
Burl himself is the first to congratulate Joy on her incredible good luck in having him.
He knows he’s a prize…he’s just wrong about which contest Joy won.
“Finding Mr. Wrong?”
Then again, Joy loves him…. and it keeps them both out of the dating pool. We all won!
And I’m glad when Verl realises she’s single, in spite of “dating” Jerry.Being in a relationship with him isn’t being part of a couple…it’s marking time.
The Pennys deserve each other . and Verla is dumb for not trying to find someone better then Jerry. Of course she doesn’t have much to bring to the market place does she. Still her sister found someone. The has to be another loser like Burl in the crustwood area. Oh maybe one of Burl’s co-workers
She does her best emotional eating when he’s not there (gets the whole box of Ho-Hos instead of just some of them), then saves his presences to get into the “really serious” chowing downs in front of the T.V. What smells, go home, inDEED!!

Burl said it right – Verl would be worse off if she had to cope being with him mornings, nights and weekends.

Susan says what most of us are thinking, and we appreciate it expressed so well.
It IS TRUE that if you live long enough, you will meet folks who look or act like the Penny’s and their ilk (possibly both).
