Every time that song came on, I thought, “That stuff isn’t ironic!” Then I’d go on to wonder about a song called “Isn’t It Ironic” that featured nothing ironic, and the irony of that. Next I’d ponder whether the irony of it all was intentional on Morrisette’s part. I’d usually wind up deciding it was unintentional, and that she really wasn’t that deep and just didn’t really understand the concept.
The real irony, I’m afraid, is that people armed only with $5 paperback dictionaries decided to attack Alanis Morrisette for using “ironic” in a way that has actually been used in writing by educated people at least since 1889. (“Irony” has been used in the same way at least since 1833.)

I agree with JW Kennedy. The cop is being pedantic – and the statement in the last panel is more sarcastic than ironic.
