Tater .. that word in its UK sense is pretty much unknown in the US. It just sounds like a funny word to us. In fact it was used as the maiden name of the fictional Peggy Bundy on the very popular “Married With Children.”
It wouldn’t occur to most people to look up every word they plan to use, to find out whether one of them might be vulgar elsewhere. I’m sure Dave meant no offense.
Susan, he should do what I do. I pre-read all of my favorites comics. Then I run a screening algorithm against offensive material. That way, I’m not actually reading the strip. Once that is done, I have a very accurate list of those strips which are guaranteed to offend me, and I head right for them, dive in, and get all “het up”. Good for the circulation, and stimulates my “morning brain”. Then I can go back at my leisure and read the boring, yet mildly amusing strips. Hey, it works for me….“Wanker” is just a word, and harmless in both its original meaning and in current context. I betcha a knickel that DB knew the meaning and used the word with malice aforethought.

He probably put it in to see how many people were paying attention and how much controversy he could engender

I’d wish they’d use these at conventions on the “Hi, my name is..” cards. I hate squinting.

It could have been worse. Mark’s first name could have been William. That’s as explcit as I’ll get.
