Mom: Graphic novels? In the library? When did they start carrying this junk? Heart: It's not junk, mom.... Heart: That's actually a sweet story about a teen girl who breaks her two front teeth and--- Mom: Well, I'm reading it first! Heart: Great. I finally find something I want to read- Mom: That's what worries me...if you want to read it, how good can it be?

Just in case somebody is wondering… this is a real graphic novel that, like, really exists:

So I was walking through the store today and saw “Smile” – ended up buying it (mainly because I saw it here) – actually a good book, going to give it to my 13 year to have.

What Heart’s Mom doesn’t seem to realize is that wholesome reading isn’t just relegated to the non graphic novels both mediums can have innapropriate content
If she’s really that worried about what Heart’s reading she should be reading the non-graphic novels along with the graphic ones.

I wasn’t allowed to go to the library alone after one incident. I brought home a book of topless women at the age of 11. The overworked checkout girl got read the riot act for letting that happen. The girl’s response was priceless, “Well I’m not the boy’s mother.” My foster mother’s was even more so, “Well neither am I!”, and she huffed out stage right without any further explanation.

Addy’s attitude perfectly embodies what I call the cod liver oil approach to life (or at least to reading): Anything that is Good For You isn’t, can’t, or shouldn’t be enjoyable as well.

Eisner award-winning. Thought of reading it myself, but I read Ghosts instead (also Eisner).
