a friend of mine had a smoke detector in the top of her 2 story living room ceiling and it was so high up they just had to live with the chirping for about 8 years until they put the house on the market to sell, they had to rent a cherry picker to change the battery………poorly placed.
My guest room has one, but it doesn’t bother me. All the detectors need changing (there is a newer type that I bought, but have not bothered to do yet). House was only built in 95- should not need such things changed.
The CO detector was not needed for me except for car as house has no gas but new one will probably at least have gas HW (and dryer- I do not use). I’d prefer gas cooktop but probably will not have. I told realtor I want to line up at least 6 before looking at them (it’s pretty much like online dating- you eliminate the obvious losers, then vet the others).

But which of the strategically placed smoke detectors is it?

It’s the detector you can never find.

Shouldn’t that be elusive?

That’s why we don’t have one. Our house is small enough and laid out in such a way, I suppose we really don’t need one anyway.

As soon as I posted that, I knew I would hear from someone on the matter you addressed. :-)
