My parents had the same living room furniture from the time they got married until my first daughter was six months old. My mom actually put iron-on mending tape on the arms of the sofa and wing chair.
I still have a 10 piece sectional sofa in my living room that I bought from Montgomery Wards at least 30 years ago. Now that I’m considering planning another move, I think it may still make the cut (the pieces are varied- some with no back or arms, some just a back or with back and either right or left arm) so they fit in any room (and I could always rearrange for the Christmas tree). It’s a honey color velour and has slight stains, but no real wear.

Most of the older furniture is better made than the stuff you can buy now. It just needs to be reupholstered.
