I don’t remember anything my HS graduation speaker said. But I do remember the minister who gave the benediction. By the time we got to him, half the girls in my class were bawling like babies. As he thundered on, he cried, “Knowing we may never see each other again…” That got half of the remaining half sobbing. Apparently not impressed, he thundered on, “KNOWING WE MAY ALL DIE TONIGHT!!!…” Well, that did it. There were roughly 250 girls in my graduating class, and all of them — and a goodly number of their friends in the stands for good measure — were now wailing uncontrollably. I remember sitting there thinking, “Nice job, doc. How’s your congregation these days?”
what, did you depend on a discourse to make something with your life? and had not been there a discourse, and had you accomplished nothing, would you blame somebody else because nobody told you to do something with your life? I admire Betty as a feet on the ground realistic person (or cartoon character), but this came out lame. Why not say instead: ‘because if I get older without having tried anything, I don’t want to feel miserable because there is no time left to try to do what I wanted’
Blah! I know countless hoards of people who’ve tried hard, but have done nothing of any consequence. There’s a small handful who’ve managed to make something that will stand the rigors of time for a little while, and a small sprinkling who may get their life’s work summed up in a paragraph in some textbook after their gone, but ultimately, their discoveries would have been discovered even if they never existed.

Alex is right. This business of asking a ten year old what they want to be when they grow up? I was fifty before I figured it out.

It only seems as if there isn’t enough time. But if we had unlimited funds we would try to do everything that interests us. .
