B-A-,-E-N-G-L-I-S-H-L-I-Ti can get Shakespeare, Dickens & Bronte from the local library. I can even find a discussion group, but the one that serves wine is probably more interesting.

Tuition here at my local state supported junior college here in the San Fernando Valley in California is still only $46 per unit. A true bargain, but only if I (a tax paying resident of California) take advantage of it, as can other California taxpayers throughout this truly great state!

And I would like to think that the other great states in the US do the same thing!! All you need to do is to get away from your tv and go out and work to get a truly excellent education!!

Interestingly, I saw a stat the other day that showed that college tuition had gone up some 500% since the 90s, faster than inflation, faster than wages, faster than anything. It’s no surprise, then, that student debt has increased proportionally. The real question for me is, what are they getting that’s worth 500% more than what they were getting in the early 90s?

I personally would say student loans are necessary given that minimum wage would not qualify you for loan under most circumstance and is not sufficient to build up savings, however

    A) There should be a cap, here in Canada the limit is about $10,000 per year.

    B) Cost of loan should be at inflation, a federally backed student loan should see it’s investment repaid by greater earnings long run paid back in taxes

    Sorry, you’re dreaming.

We did exactly what you propose; first two years at community college, living at home, last two years at a state school, and my daughter worked FULL time while still maintaining full time student status – a requirement for some of the loans. She did have to live up at the campus the last two years since the school was a 2 hour drive from our home, but we paid for the first two years and helped where we could on the last two, and she still ended up with significant student debt – no other way to do it. There were many gotchas that you are clearly not aware of.

“It is not that difficult.” – Wrong. It is a very complex issue not anywhere as simple as your ill-informed opinion makes it out to be.
