I used to work with a doctor who was forever complaining that her printer didn’t work. She’d come in and bother our office to make a copy of something. I had to discuss a patient with her, and dropped something on the floor – which was when I discovered the thing was unplugged.
applied literally to hardware then can also be applied virtually depending on circumstances. For example, software fails – is it installed correctly? Was it started properly? What, if any, failures were logged during install and start?

This is an old joke but it begs the question of how tvs get unplugged on their own.

step one in trouble shooting – is it plugged in?
step two – is it turned on?
