Many moons ago I went to Bisbee AZ. There is an old metal mine there called the Queen Mine. Queen Mine TourAt one point our guide had everyone turn off their lamps.I had never experienced darkness like this. It was pitch black. You literally could not see your hand in front of your face.

Here in Missouri, we have many caves to explore. That is one of the tricks of every cave tour. When the lights go out, it’s a darkness that your eyes can never adjust too. It always makes me wonder how the critters in the caves take all that light. If they are blind, does the light even register for them?

Years ago the university Psychology Department put on a display called the “Tactile Tunnel.” You crawled through the tunnel in total darkness, experiencing the (highly varied) environment only by touch. To this day, I can see the inside of the tunnel in full color!
