Such an emergency fund, or “buffer account” as I call it, is what keeps my personal economy afloat. Add to it whenever I can, subtract whenever I need. And keeping the adds on average greater than the subtracts is what’s enabled me to treat the family to the occasional holiday trip without the added burden of a loan or extensive creditcardery. Best idea I ever had.
My husband does his best to keep me in the loop, but I developed dyscalculia when I was in my forties and while I understand what he is telling me, it doesn’t “compute”. (t’s akin to dyslexia, but with numbers)
If Bud is wondering how much…. I was told not to think of your expenses if you already can get by without worry on your monthly income. Instead – save 3-6 months of your monthly income. Then if you can save more for bigger problems (new roof, new plumbing, dentist), then save.

He does have a point. If she is going to look after the books and not include him, she can’t expect him to know anything…

Anytime she starts on saving and finance he runs away as.fast as he can. That loop isn’t a lasso she can use to rope him in.

I hope you outlive your spouse. Otherwise, the survivor is in for a nasty surprise.
