This is fact. In February, all these white kids in Minnesota would come to the bus stop in shorts and tees, while my siblings and I wore down coats, Sorel boots, and wool hats. They used to laugh and call us freaks.

I was rather surprised to learn about this stereotype (of white people). I happen to somewhat embody it, in that I’m rather infamous among people who know me for going outside in the cold underdressed. But that’s ONLY if I’ll be going short distances. “Why aren’t you wearing a coat?!”“What for? I’m just walking five blocks to the store.”

Given that the people telling me I’m nuts for this are almost all white people, it’s surprising to learn that ALL white people are seen as doing this.

My house is 45F right now. Much warmer than outside during the winter (although it was a bit colder when it was in the negatives.) People that visit know what temp I keep my house. And if they’re here for any length of time, they wear a coat in my house.

It’s a little different when you never leave the cold temperatures (although I hardly consider 45 cold). If you really REALLY love the cold temperatures like you say you do, lower your house to 45 for a week and see how long you last in shorts and a T.

I always get tickled at the ones I see wearing a big heavy parka and shorts and flip flops.

@JLG – I wouldn’t go so far as to say that ALL white people do this, but I have only seen this done by whites (usually youths). Now, I have seen all manner of people doing this when they don’t wan to be burdened with a coat at a social event like a nightclub. Ever see the wait line at a popular spot in February?

Try watching everyone in LA wearing coats when it hits 65 and I’m in shorts and a tee. I get the weird looks.

But it doesn’t drop below zero in South Texas, at least last time I down there during the winter months. In the northern Midwest they issue severe frostbite warnings when the windchill drops to subzero levels; yet we’d still see kids, usually middle and high school age, strolling around with legs, arms and face exposed. I didn’t attribute it back then to race. I thought the kids who did this thought they were invincible, or at least indifferent to bitter cold.
