In 1951, I played my first season with a nearby community band. We played a ten concert season with a rehearsal for each concert. We got $5.00 for each rehearsal and concert. The $100 paid for my textbooks for a full course load the next school year. Now we play six concerts with two rehearsals each for $175 total. It pays my gasoline from the adjacent county – in a Prius.
I remember a college text book I didn’t buy because it cost as much as a week’s worth of groceries. $25!! Amazing how much things can change in not quite 1/2 a century.

Are you sure he has a science degree? If I remember right those were some of the most expensive textbooks.

I was just going to say the same thing…
Scientific textbooks at his level…. graduate school…. can cost upwards of $200 apiece.
Â
And with universities requiring that professors constantly publish their work,
students find that old editions (ie used books) are incompatible with their coursework, and have to spring for new editions.
Â
Then again…. the cartoonists may not know that.

I feel your pain, Claire. I just took a course for fun, and the text cost $120. And it was a used copy.

Textbooks are a ripoff. For many classes, there’s no need for new editions every year or two, especially the entry level classes.
