One of the central fictional characters in Paris by Edward Rutherfurd is a steelworker who becomes sort of a pet to Gustave Eiffel when they build the framework for the Statue of Liberty, and then helps build the Tower. When the story moves ahead to 1940, he (at about 70) leads a team of saboteurs who cut the elevator cables to keep Hitler from using it (the sabotage actually happened).

Pay the extra to use the elevator unless you’re very, very fit. For us it was well worth it!
