Had a dog (part lab; soft mouth) catch the same squirrel there times. Well, she had it in her mouth squealing and let it go by accident. She caught it again, it squealed, and she let it go on purpose. She caught it again, and it squealed again. I took it away; it was not dead or bleeding and I tossed it over the fence. I think she considered it to be the ultimate combination of a squeak toy and fetch toy. One that threw itself for her to fetch. She’s now obsessed with squirrels: much more than my others. One does not care at all (same one does not fear thunder, firecrackers or vacuums.)
Our Benjamin caught a baby rabbit once, he turned with it in his mouth, as if to say “What do I do now?” The bunbun, being NOT a dumb bunny, squealed & wiggled & Ben dropped it in surprise. End of story. The next time he “caught” a rabbit, it ran away from him…towards the neighbors dog! So it turned & ran back…into Ben, who tripped over it & poor bunbun died of the shock. We gave it a burial with honours.
