What are those people protesting for? Freedom, their signs say. Freedom from what? I can't tell from here. Well, I have to know if it's a freedom I'm comfortable with, so I'll know if they're blocking the sidewalk or just using it.
The modern “kiss of death” is to marginalize the other person’s comments. The usual technique is to address the wrong question, spewing umbrage all the way. (What color is umbrage, anyway?)
I find that a Facebook approach works- Apoplectic Rage as the ‘Go’ position, then feigning confusion when it’s pointed out that you didn’t understand the conversation at the outset, then apoplectic outrage again while leaving in a huff. A huff, I’ve learned, is not a classic automobile built in one of the smaller European countries.

I might disagree with what you say, but I’ll defend unto death my right to disagree with what you say…
