Last night Mum told me she was worried that she might have missed the Women’s Figure Skating. There is still three nights coverage of that still to come.
Got to watch most of the Canada/USA hockey game last night, except She-Who-Must-Control-The-Remote kept switching to NBC to see if the ice dancing had started yet.
My take on the Winter Olympics: it’s not a sport if you count style points, don’t have a defense, a rock rolling downhill could win a medal, or if your clothing is called a “costume” rather than a “uniform.”
I’d call the racing events sports if there are at least two individuals competing directly against each other, since that often involves defensive strategies.
By my definition, curling is a sport but figure skating is not, although figure skating is far more athletic. So, mine is not a perfect system, more of a rule of thumb.
Actually, since this is the first winter olympics I have seen in high def and with a DVR, I am really enjoying the games. Biathalon, cross country skiing and even new sports like Ski Cross are very interesting. Plus, the U.S. showing in the alpine events has been very fun to watch along with the speed skating prowess. Even some of the athletic, non-sports, like the half-pipe and the moguls have been enjoyable. And I don’t call them sports because they use a judge to determine the majority of the score. When they can replace the judges with a truly impartial machine, then I’ll put them back in the sports category. Plus, with the DVR I can fastforward right past the worst events like figure skating and ice dancing so they don’t get time to really bother me!
The Olympic motto: Citius, Altius, Fortius. Faster, Higher, Stronger. Nothing in there about “Prettier.”
I’m with RayC (more or less). If it can’t be quantified, it ain’t a sport. If aesthetic judgments can affect the outcome, it ain’t a sport. If the background music matters, it ain’t a sport.
Bowling takes less athletic ability than ballet, but bowling’s a sport and ballet is not.
And the remote can give you ON Demand for movies or the stuff you missed on few cable nets. Or you can re-watch the Titanic DVD to see Leo before he got all…you know…grungy!!!

Ray, the only thing I got from your ramble was that you like to watch hockey, don’t mind curling and really dislike figure skating.
